Veliko Turnovo Town

Nov 15, 10:25 PM

Veliko Turnovo Town is the ancient capital of Bulgaria, perched on the rock face overlooking the Yantra River. It is a spectacular setting for a city so full of history, yet Veliko Turnovo still remains relatively undiscovered to the tourist masses.

The city first saw settlers in about 5500 BC and the place has seen a turbulent history in the intervening years. Have a look at our history page for some further detail. It’s a pleasure to wander along the ancient narrow cobbled streets. Saunter along the famous Gurko Street (named after the Russian, General Gurko, who liberated Tarnovgrad from the Turks in 1877) and you will get a great opportunity to study the unique architecture of Bulgarian buildings.

Irrespective of all this ancient history, Veliko Turnovo Town is a modern and progressive city. Much of this is perhaps down to the fact that VT is the home to Bulgaria’s second largest university after the capital Sofia. The existence of the university and the many students studying there generates a vibrant feel to the town. There are countless place to eat and drink, with many of the bars and restaurants offering fantastic views over the old town.

You’ll also find a great range of options for places to stay. Those of you that enjoy a spot of shopping will not be disappointed either. The Samovodska Charshiya Complex, based around a cobbled square is the place to head for Bulgarian Arts & Crafts. This area used to be a hive of activity of activity with blacksmiths and carpenters producing crafts.

Many of the buildings have now been restored and provide small stores to browse amongst. There are still some craft stores where you watch carvings of traditional Bulgarian toys being produced. Intermingled between these craft shops is the occasional antique shop. These are always worth a browse selling some bizarre and wonderful items.

If you are after a more up-to-date shopping experience then there are many boutiques that line the main street, Stefan Stambolov. Alternatively you could pay a visit to the new Shopping Mall that has opened in the new town. The mall has a range of modern shops, including a very modern supermarket, along with restaurants, a bowling alley and a multiplex cinema.
